DISCLAIMER: I am not really sure how taboo it is to read multiple books at once, but here we are. I will be spoiling this book as I read along for the most part, however I will try my best to keep some plot twists vague. I dunno, I am trying to figure out my writing voice again. Either way, here we go!

Well I picked this book up last night after staring at it on my book shelf for months. And I am already 70 plus ages in. I don’t think i read that much that quickly in one sitting in a long while. But the writing style, the setting is amazing and so far I am really enjoying the characters.

The basic setting is this dark medieval fantasy setting with gothic tones and gargoyles of all things. I dont think I’ve really heard of gargoyles being a main thing since the Hunchback of Notre Dam. So that was very cool. The main character is a girl named Six – or Sybil – and the other women are also named by numbers, One through Five. Its a little hard to keep everyone straight with numeral names. They are Diviners and tells ones future through a ritual in a spring of water at the center of the church. Loved the visuals and descriptions of the atmosphere. The opening fortune telling is that of the new boy King, Benedict, and how every higher up god does not like this poor kid. So realy mood killer for this hopeful scared shitless 17 year old.

Now after the whole ceremony high jinks occur. We learn more about the six women who tell fortunes, and their roles, expectations, and expiration dates. Now, the author is vague about the ages of these girls. Their time at the church is 10 years, and nearly all of them are coming to the end of their term. SO I am going to brute force that these girls are 21 and up gosh darn it. The kings age is the only one really specified – that or I completely blocked it out. The story tells about them joining the church at a young age, but never exactly specifies. I am assuming this is to either allow younger readers to relate to the main character. However this book is clearly not for young audiences.

What surprised me about this book so far was the fact that these diviners, holy icons of the land, can have sex. Which goes against everything that is traditional about said roles. These gals have relationships with both men and women. Cool. Now the catch is that these women cannot leave the church grounds. So their only relationship to the outside world is through divinations and who ever sleeps over in secret. Though, their time is coming to an end and soon they will be given the boot.

Comes in the tall dark and brooding knight who is all knowing and brooding and muscular, Rory. When Six first meets Rory it is kind of an amusing interaction. We are doing the aggravated to lovers bit with these two. Through a series of events, along with barfing on peoples shoes, Six convinces ((aka blackmails)) the king, his muscle brooding man knight, and the female knight for good measure, to take the six diviners to the nearest town for a night of freedom and to experience the current world.

So things have developed and I have not been updating as i should. But what I can say is that I am enjoying this book greatly.

I am pass the point where the girls and the knights go on their sneak away adventure and party it up like they have nothing too loose. They even win a challenge against the brooding hunk of a grump, one in which he has to have his fortune told by Six. Which of coarse he does not want to do.

Now here is where the real mystery begins. Six reads Rory’s (the knight) fortune and gets some weird messages. No way to interpret them at all. But at least the moth from the title gets a role. Some spooky shit starts happening and people go missing within the days that follow.

Now I dont know about you, but politics and religion are those under the stereotype that is easily corruptible in my opinion. So I am curious what is going to happen when the other five diviners go missing – some how – even when Six is holding on to One. I have so many questions at this point.
